I have made a mood board based on the demographics of my target audience. I have chosen these images as they represent the types of teenagers that we found would enjoy our film. We found that our target audience enjoyed spending their time doing activities such as surfing the internet, doing their nails, playing on game consoles and listening to music. The range of ages that we found was 16-18, which meant that our target audience would still be completing their education. We found all of this information out via both survey monkey and our focus group.
OUR FINDINGS: DEMOGRAPHICS
We asked the members of our focus group to complete a questionnaire which would help us find out a bit more about them as an audience, and about their expectations of psychological thrillers.
We asked our focus group the question "What do you like to do in your free time?" From our results, we found that the most popular way for teenagers to spend their free time was by socializing and also spending time on the internet.
We also asked them "What are your hobbies?" We found out that the most popular hobbies of our target audience was exercising and reading.
To get a brief overview of who our target audience was, we asked them the questions "How old are you?" and "Are you male or female?" From these questions, we gathered that the age of our target audience was around 16-17, and that the majority of them were female. However, there were a few members who exceeded this age, and there was also a few male participants.
OUR FINDINGS: PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER EXPECTATIONS
We then asked them about what psychological thrillers they've watched. We found out that the most popular psychological thriller was Silence of the Lambs, followed by The Sixth Sense and then Carrie.
STOCK CHARACTERS
We also asked about what sort of characters they expected to find in a psychological thriller opening. We found that the most popular characters were:
- An Outcasted teenager or child
- A Policeman or Investigator
- A Councillor or Therapist
The next question we asked regarding the stock characters was 'What kind of role do you expect your chose stock characters to play?" We asked this because we wanted to gain an idea about the kind of roles were expected of our characters.
STOCK SETTINGS
Then, we asked about what types of settings they would expect to see in a psychological thriller opening. We found out that a mental or psychiatric hospital would be the most popular place, which was then followed by homes and then quiet deserted places such as fields.
EXPECTATIONS
Next, we asked them about their expectations of psychological thrillers, and what they expected to see featured in a psychological thriller opening. We also asked if they expected to be scared by a psychological thriller, and asked if they thought that the plot should be something out of the ordinary. We found that 92.59% of the people we asked answered 'yes' to both of these questions.
We wanted to see if our audience believed that psychological thrillers required the use of supernatural elements such a ghosts. Our results showed that 66.67% of the people we asked answered 'no' as they believed that they weren't necessary.
To create a stronger sense of what and what not to do in a psychological thriller opening, we also asked the question "what do you not expect to see in a psychological thriller opening?" These were the answers that our audience gave us:
